Years into our daughter diagnosis we learned that certain scents can trigger seizure activity. While many know this is the basis to our company and a huge reason to why Purple Rose was born, but the knowledge of god and bad scents is still not as public as it should be. So many Epilepsy and Neurology patients do not realize that certain scents they are exposed to regularly can actually be seizure triggers or bring on other symptoms. Some can cause heightened neurological activity, migraines, or even asthmatic type reactions. Our mission to spread Awareness about this does not stop with providing quality and safe products, we want to educate and inform people as well. So here we will share what we have learned in regards to scents; the good, the bad, and the truth that many companies do not make public. A huge part of scent safety is knowing what is in those scent blends we all know and love, as well as which scents can become triggers. For example our Sage and Citrus is made using a clary sage because the standard raw sage can be trigger risks.
Odors and Perfumes
Perfume directly affects the brain and has both a physiological and a psychological effect upon our respiration and breathing, as well as upon our moods and thoughts. Although our sense of smell declines with age, you need to be aware that strong or even subtle smells or perfumes can be one of your triggers for seizures. Sometimes a person who has experienced some seizure activity brought about by a particular odor may not discuss it because they think other people, even their doctors, will think they’re crazy. But it’s for real. And then there are other odors, much less enticing, some of which include paint, hairspray, cleaning products, ammonia, kerosene, car exhaust fumes, gasoline and solvents.
